Lost or Broken Fillings
A lost or broken filling leaves the underlying tooth structure exposed. This is an urgent issue because it allows bacteria and food particles to enter the tooth, potentially leading to rapid decay and infection of the tooth's pulp (nerve and blood vessels). Pain may or may not be present initially, but without prompt repair, the damage can escalate quickly, requiring more extensive and costly treatment like root canals or even extraction.
Broken Tooth or Chipped Teeth
Chipping or breaking a tooth, even if it seems minor, can expose the inner layers of the tooth, which are more vulnerable to decay and sensitivity. Deeper cracks can reach the nerve, causing significant pain and increasing the risk of infection. Because enamel, the tooth's protective outer layer, is compromised, the tooth is more susceptible to further damage. Immediate attention can often allow for repair and prevent more serious problems down the line.
Tooth Knocked Out
A knocked-out tooth is a critical dental emergency requiring immediate action. The sooner the tooth is replanted, the higher the chance of it successfully reattaching. Keeping the tooth moist (ideally in milk or by placing it back in the socket) is vital. Even if the entire tooth isn't knocked out and a portion remains, prompt evaluation is necessary to determine the best course of action to save the remaining tooth structure and prevent infection.
Bleeding
Uncontrolled bleeding in your mouth is a serious concern that could indicate underlying issues such as gum disease, trauma, or infection. These conditions require professional dental care to diagnose the cause and provide appropriate treatment. Delaying treatment can lead to worsening infections, further tissue damage, and potential complications. While initial self-care like rinsing with salt water and applying pressure can help temporarily, it does not address the root cause of the bleeding.
Swelling and Pain
Facial swelling related to your mouth is a serious sign of infection that needs immediate attention. These infections can spread rapidly to other areas of the face and neck and, in severe cases, can become life-threatening. While a swelling might sometimes appear like a gum pimple and the pain might temporarily subside, the underlying infection is likely still present and actively destroying bone. Antibiotics alone often won't resolve the issue; the source of the infection needs to be addressed by a dental professional.
Tooth Extractions
While sometimes necessary, the removal of a tooth creates a void that can have significant consequences for your oral health. Teeth rely on each other for support and alignment. When a tooth is missing, adjacent teeth can begin to tilt and drift into the empty space. This can lead to bite problems, difficulty cleaning, increased risk of decay and gum disease in the remaining teeth, and even the eventual loss of more teeth. Replacing a missing tooth is crucial for maintaining proper function, preventing further tooth movement, and preserving the overall structure of your mouth and jawbone.
